This webinar will explore the basics of news photography for your publications, what makes a good news or feature photograph, how to determine the best camera to use, identifying hi-resolution photo files, how to effectively obtain stock photos to illustrate stories, how to work with freelancers, selecting submitted photos, licensing, sourcing images for use, all while avoiding photo-rights violations and heavy fines. Led by Chaz Muth, journalism professor and newsroom director for Trinity Washington University.
Chaz Muth is a multimedia journalist and journalism educator who has been reporting the news for decades. Currently a journalism professor and newsroom director for Trinity Washington University, Chaz was the Multimedia Editor for Catholic News Service and during his 15-year tenure he traveled the world as a CNS reporter, photographer, video journalist and podcaster, covering anything from famine to a papal transition. Chaz joined the Catholic press in 2006 after many years working in the secular media, including the Baltimore Sun Media Group. The Catholic Media Association named Chaz "Multimedia Journalist of the Year" in 2023 and 2020, "Videographer/Video Producer of the Year" in 2016, and presented him with the "2020 Cardinal John Patrick Foley Award" for excellence and innovation in Catholic storytelling, one of the highest honors in the Catholic press.
